Study shows teens less inclined to get their drivers license

Posted on January 26th, 2012 No Comments

A study conducted by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute has shown that teens in Illinois are less motivated and excited to get their drivers licenses than in years past.

In 1983, 80 percent of 18 year olds had their drivers license, but in 2008 the numbers dropped to 65 percent.  As always, the cost of driving is high for new drivers.  The cost of gas, car insurance, and a car can all be deterrents for teenagers planning to drive.

West Aurora High School senior, Rachel Berry, stated, “I waited until I was 16 and a half (to take my test).” She also said that many of her friends also waited, and some are still without licenses.

Cell-phone ban coming to Illinois

Posted on January 6th, 2012 No Comments

On Tuesday, State Senator John Cullerton (D-Chicago) stated that there is a strong possibility of a cell phone ban on its way to the state of Illinois.

It has been illegal since 2005 to drive while using a cell phone in the city of Chicago.  And on New Years Day, the state banned large truck and bus drivers from using a cell phone unless it is hands-free.

Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board made suggestions that cell-phone use both hands-free and handheld should be banned across the country.  State Senator Cullerton said,  ”It’s the distraction in talking to someone that’s not in the car with you. It’s not what’s in your hand, it’s what’s in your head.”  It is unclear when this new law would be added, but driver safety has been a very popular issue amongst the state legislature.

Nationwide cell phone ban while driving proposed

Posted on December 15th, 2011 No Comments

The National Highway Traffic Safety Board announced on Tuesday a proposal across the country to ban all cell phone use while driving.

In August 2010, a car accident in Gray Summit, MO killed two people and injured 38 others.  It was later found that prior to the accident, the 19 year old driver who was responsible for the accident sent 11 text messages in 11 minutes.  This incident was the impetus for the Board’s proposal.

“More than 3,000 people lost their lives last year in distraction-related accidents…no call, no text, no update, is worth a human life,” stated Chairwoman Deborah A.P. Hersman.

This proposal sends a strong message to legislatures responsible for changing laws regarding cell phone use.

National Drunk Driving Prevention Month has begun

Posted on December 2nd, 2011 No Comments

The prevention of drunk driving is the key focus during the month of December.

In Illinois, it is considered illegal to knowingly permit an intoxicated driver to get behind the wheel. If that person were to be pulled over and arrested for drunk driving, the passenger could be arrested as well. This violation can result in a one-year prison sentence as well as a $2,500 fine.

Drunk driving accidents increase during the month of December due to holiday parties associated with an increased level of drinking. It is important, especially in the state of Illinois, to plan ahead for a designated driver before going out this holiday season.

Accidents happen every day. It is important to have car insurance to be protected. If you are in the market for car insurance in Illinois, please contact an Illinois auto insurance agent at Insure On The Spot today by calling 1-888-972-SAVE today.

Safety a large concern over Thanksgiving weekend

Posted on November 22nd, 2011 No Comments

Drivers in the state of Illinois are being urged by the Illinois State Police to drive with caution when traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Excessive traffic and impatient drivers could increase the chances for car accidents to happen over the long weekend. Police will be conducting roadblock tests all over the state in an effort to remove reckless drivers from the road this weekend.

Last year there were numerous accidents that resulted in over 700 people being injured, 15 of them fatally. Drivers need to keep the distractions to a minimum in their vehicles, pay attention to their surroundings and most of all, be patient. Travel safely this holiday weekend in order to prevent a car accident.

Accidents can happen at any time and it is important to be insured. If you are in the market for auto insurance please contact an Illinois auto insurance agent at Insure On The Spot by calling 1-888-972-SAVE today.
