Traffic and safety experts at AAA are warning drivers of the dangers of driving under the influence of dogs. The auto club recently completed a survey studying dog owners and their driving habits with their dogs. In the survey, nearly two-thirds of participants admitted to driving while distracted by their dog or dogs.
In the poll of 1,000 dog owners, 21 percent admitted to driving with their dog in their lap, 7 percent said they have given their dog food or water while driving, and 5 percent admitted to playing with their dog while driving.
Eighty percent of participants said they drive with their dog in the car often, but only 17 percent said they have ever used animal restraints. AAA warns drivers that driving with a dog in the car can be as distracting and dangerous as texting and driving. Being distracted can cause harm to yourself, your pet, and other drivers and passengers on the road. Safety experts at AAA and animal advocates at the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals advise drivers to always keep pets in the back seat of the vehicle and to use animal restraints.
