Half of drivers do not use turn signals, says study

Posted on May 8th, 2012 No Comments

A new study by the Society of Automotive Engineers has revealed that 48 percent of all drivers do not properly use their turn signals when changing lanes. Not using a turn signal at all or failing to turn it off in a timely manner results in two million accidents a year.

In all, the study estimates that two billion turn signal violations occur every day. Researchers observed that one in four drivers failed to signal for a turn.

These findings are consistent with a survey conducted by Response Insurance in 2006. Of the drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 that responded to the survey, 71 percent said they did not use their turn signal.

A failure-to-signal citation could cause you to lose your good driver discount and may even increase your car insurance premiums. For a free quote, contact the car insurance agents of Insure on the Spot at 1-888-972-SAVE.

Illinois ranked as one of the least expensive states for car insurance

Posted on March 13th, 2012 No Comments

Illinois took the 41st spot in a new survey by Insure.com that ranked states according to car insurance rates. Drivers in Illinois pay less for auto insurance than most of the country, averaging a yearly rate of $1,192. Louisiana residents pay more than double with an average of $2,536, making it the most expensive state.

More than good or bad driving and what kind of car you own affect rates. Insurance companies also consider the area’s crime rate, recent natural disasters, amount of uninsured drivers, and state insurance laws.

The most expensive states for car insurance usually have a lot of uninsured drivers and see high levels of insurance companies award accident victims.

Driving without insurance can have significant financial and legal repercussions. If you live in Illinois and are looking for affordable car insurance, contact the car insurance agents of Insure on the Spot at 888-972-SAVE today.

Wrong way DUI crash on Kennedy seriously injures drivers

Posted on February 23rd, 2012 No Comments

Vanessa M. Castillo, 25, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence for causing a collision that seriously injured herself and the other driver.

Castillo drove inbound in the outbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway early Wednesday morning.  She was driving a silver Chrysler Sebring when she clipped a semi truck, a Mazda, and finally crashed head on into a Nissan Maxima.  She was charged with driving under the influence, driving the wrong way, and operating a vehicle without a driver’s license on Wednesday.

The 34 year old woman in the other vehicle fractured both of her legs, but was still conscious when police arrived. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.  Castillo was unconscious and smelled of alcohol at the scene.  Her drivers license was suspended in 2009 for not having high-risk car insurance.  She has a record with many other infractions listed.

The dangers of being uninsured

Posted on February 9th, 2012 No Comments

It is very common that after a tragic car accident occurs, it is discovered that one of the vehicles’ drivers has very little or no car insurance.  If that is the case, the injured persons involved in the crash seek out underinsured-motorist coverage from their own insurance company to compensate for the medical expenses relating to the accident.

The Appellate Court of Illinois faced a case called Columbia Mutual Insurance Company v. Herrin, in which the court had to determine the amount of underinsured-motorist coverage each person could receive from their insurance company.  This can be a very difficult decision, and is one that can be avoided with proper auto insurance coverage.

Cell-phone ban coming to Illinois

Posted on January 6th, 2012 No Comments

On Tuesday, State Senator John Cullerton (D-Chicago) stated that there is a strong possibility of a cell phone ban on its way to the state of Illinois.

It has been illegal since 2005 to drive while using a cell phone in the city of Chicago.  And on New Years Day, the state banned large truck and bus drivers from using a cell phone unless it is hands-free.

Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board made suggestions that cell-phone use both hands-free and handheld should be banned across the country.  State Senator Cullerton said,  ”It’s the distraction in talking to someone that’s not in the car with you. It’s not what’s in your hand, it’s what’s in your head.”  It is unclear when this new law would be added, but driver safety has been a very popular issue amongst the state legislature.

The prevention of drunk driving is the key focus during the month of December.

In Illinois, it is considered illegal to knowingly permit an intoxicated driver to get behind the wheel. If that person were to be pulled over and arrested for drunk driving, the passenger could be arrested as well. This violation can result in a one-year prison sentence as well as a $2,500 fine.

The organization distributes a five-star rating to states that have shown exemplary efforts against drunk driving. Five states have qualified for this rating including; Illinois, Arizona, Nebraska, Utah and Kansas.

There are five different standards that the states have to put into place to earn this award. One of these consists of setting up sobriety checkpoints throughout the state. Another standard involves license removal of individuals who have been charged with driving while intoxicated.
