Car-crash insurance scams are on the rise, according to a new report released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

The report shows that questionable insurance claims are up 46% from 2007 to 2009. The study ranks states with the highest number of claims from accidents that are most likely staged, with Florida coming in at number one, with 3,006 questionable claims in the three year period. New York ranks second with 1, 680 questionable claims, followed by California (1,619), Texas (792) and Illinois with 433 questionable claims.

The criminals who perpetrate these staged accidents usually work in groups, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. A typical scam may include paid witnesses, several drivers, passengers who will claim injuries, and medical providers who will make false claims for “treatment.” It is estimated that auto insurance fraud adds $200 t0 $300 a year to the average annual insurance policy cost.
