New law protects volunteer drivers
Posted on September 6th, 2011
House Bill 1378 was recently signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn and protects volunteer drivers in the state.
The legislation prevents auto insurance providers from charging volunteer drivers more on their premiums or policies because they are volunteer drivers. Furthermore, the new law prevents auto insurers from denying volunteer drivers coverage on a vehicle.
Volunteer drivers must still have liability insurance. Also, car insurance providers can take into consideration many other factors besides the the fact that a vehicle is being used by a volunteer driver in determining the cost of a policy.
Quinn said of the new law, “Many seniors rely on others when they need to go to the grocery store, pick up prescriptions or visit the doctor, and it is important that their volunteer drivers have the insurance coverage they need. This legislation clears hurdles for volunteer drivers who are helping our seniors maintain their independence.”

Same-sex couples can receive marriage discount on car insurance
Posted on August 29th, 2011
3 car insurance providers recently announced that they are offering marriage discounts to same-sex couples in states where same-sex marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships are legal.
Allstate and State Farm are providing same-sex couples with the same discount of up to 10 percent that drivers who are married often receive. In addition, Esurance is offering a similar discount to same-sex couples, but the discount is currently limited to Illinois, Oregon, Washington, and California.
Marital status is generally considered when determining a driver’s premium because married drivers have been shown to be less likely to be in an accident. A spokesperson for State Farm said of the same-sex discount, “Marriage is marriage. It doesn’t matter if you are married to someone of the same sex.”
