Driving Safely Near Large Trucks
Accidents involving large vehicles like 18-wheelers and buses have the potential to be very harmful to everyone involved. These types of accidents usually involve serious injuries and even fatalities for the victims. While sometimes the truck drivers themselves or the company responsible for manufacturing and repairing the truck are responsible for accidents, often the accidents are caused by the poor driving decisions of passenger car drivers.
To help prevent accidents, it is important to keep in mind particular features of large trucks that make them more dangerous than other types of vehicles:
- Difficulty braking. The massive size and weight of large trucks make them difficult to slow down quickly or come to a stop if necessary. When passenger cars cut too closely to the front of a big truck and then hit the brakes or slow down, they run the risk of causing an accident if the truck cannot slow down in time.
- Extensive blind spots. In addition to the blind spots found on passenger cars, large trucks have blind spots directly behind the vehicle, next to the passenger door, and along the side of the vehicle. When driving near a large truck, remember that if you cannot see the truck’s mirrors, the truck driver cannot see you.
Next time you are on the freeway, remember the increased dangers and difficulties of handling a large truck and do your part to drive safely and avoid accidents.
