Half of drivers do not use turn signals, says study

A new study by the Society of Automotive Engineers has revealed that 48 percent of all drivers do not properly use their turn signals when changing lanes. Not using a turn signal at all or failing to turn it off in a timely manner results in two million accidents a year.

In all, the study estimates that two billion turn signal violations occur every day. Researchers observed that one in four drivers failed to signal for a turn.

These findings are consistent with a survey conducted by Response Insurance in 2006. Of the drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 that responded to the survey, 71 percent said they did not use their turn signal.

Driver charged with DUI after causing wreck

A 19 year-old Chicago man has been charged with driving under the influence after he hit a taxi in Gage Park, sending five people to the hospital. Authorities say they are seeking felony charges against the under-aged intoxicated driver.

One passenger in the teen’s car was sent to the hospital as were all four people in the taxi. A girl in the taxi was ejected from the vehicle upon impact and has been taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical to serious condition. The condition of the other victims are not known.

Along with a DUI charge, the driver has also been cited for driving without insurance and failing to produce a driver’s license.

This month is National Distracted Driving Awareness month

Study finds traffic fatalities increase on Tax Day

Man sentenced to nine years for drunk driving accident

A former Chicago city worker was sentenced last week to nine years in prison after he drove drunk and then hit several people on a busy sidewalk. The accident happened last May as the man was driving a city-owned truck near the Gold Coast Historic District.

When the 62 year-old was apprehended by police, his blood alcohol level was measured at over two times the legal limit. The man pleaded guilty to charges of drunk driving and only received nine of the 24-year maximum sentence.

At least seven people were hit when the truck jumped the curb. One man suffered four broken vertebrae and one woman now relies on a cane to get around.

Chicago named as city with worst speed traps

Husband causes car accident, sends wife to hospital

Two Chicago parents were on their way to Milwaukee to take their teenage daughter and her friend back to Marquette University Sunday afternoon when the father drove through a stop sign and struck another vehicle.

The accident sent all four people in the car to the hospital. He, his daughter, and the friend were treated and released. The man’s 51 year-old wife is currently in critical condition with a herniated diaphragm; lacerated liver; and fractures to her ankle, pelvis, shoulder, ribs, and teeth. No one in the other car was injured.

Police have not issued citations at this time but say they plan on citing him for failing to yield at a stop sign.
