In the poll of 1,000 dog owners, 21 percent admitted to driving with their dog in their lap, 7 percent said they have given their dog food or water while driving, and 5 percent admitted to playing with their dog while driving.

McCoy began to flee the second accident as well, but stopped near 900 W. Grand Ave. due to damage to his white Lexus.  He then began to attempt to enter passing vehicles.  After several failed attempts, a Near North District police officer tried to arrest him.  McCoy was able to break free and jumped into the police officer’s SUV.  While driving off, McCoy hit the police officer and another one who had come to help, before running into a fire hydrant.  Police officers were then able to successfully handcuff and arrest McCoy with the help of a passerby.

McCoy is facing several charges including, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and criminal damage to property, reckless driving, and driving uninsured.

Between August 23rd and September 3rd, the intersection will be closed to install new signs, better pavement markings, and new concrete crossing panels.  Illinois Commerce Commission officials say that they hope the changes will “grab the attention of motorists about the potentially deadly situation at the complex, high-volume rail-roadway intersection near the Kennedy Expressway”.

ICC officials believe that even greater safety measures should be taken at the intersection but they are unfortunately too costly.  For example, their primary options would be to build a bridge or install new electronic circuitry to improve the timing of railroad crossing gates.

News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro told reporters that the accident happened around 10:15 PM at the intersection of Central Avenue and Washington Boulevard.  Officers were unsure of exactly what caused the two squad cars to collide and whether or not any other vehicles were involved, but will continue to investigate.

The four officers injured in the accident were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and Stroger Hospital of Cook County.  Two were listed as in serious-to-critical condition and two in fair-to-serious condition, but none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

According to California Highway Patrol officials, the 20-year old driver of Golf, Illinois was driving a Toyota Highlander with her sister when she tried to turn left onto the Clark Avenue overpass when she was broadsided by a truck heading eastbound.  The jaws of life had to be used to extricate both the driver and her sister from Toyota Highlander.  The woman’s sister was airlifted to Cottage Hospital in critical condition.

Officials do not believe alcohol was a factor and will continue to investigate to determine what caused the tragic accident.

The accident occurred on Bishop Ford Freeway around 130th Street when a vehicle collided with a second vehicle in the northbound lanes of the freeway.  The second vehicle then hit a third vehicle before falling into a ditch.  The driver of the first vehicle fled the scene of the accident.  Police officers have not released a description of the vehicle.

Four people in the third car were treated for minor injuries at the scene of the accident.  One person from the second car was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious-to-critical conditon, while two others were taken to other hospitals in fair-to-serious condition.

The Nagle Avenue railroad crossing near Avondale Avenue on the Northwest Side has had six accidents since 2005.  Butler blames becoming pinned on the track and the accident on poor traffic signals surrounding the track.  The Illinois Department of Transportation is responsible for the railroad crossing, however the Chicago Department of Transportation is responsible for the traffic signals operated at the Nagle Avenue crossing.

The unidentified driver of the Volkswagen was sent to MetroSouth Medical Center where he later died.  A man and woman in the BMW were sent to Rush University Medical Center where they were treated for minor injuries.
